What is Mahjong Solitaire?
Mahjong Solitaire is a one-player game: mahjong tiles are stacked in layers, and you clear them by picking two matching tiles at a time. You can only pick a tile with nothing on top of it and an open side on the left or right. Which pair you take first changes which tiles open up later. Clear every tile to win. No yaku or scoring are involved, so all you need to see is whether two tiles show the same picture.

Rules of Mahjong Solitaire
These rules always apply at our tables.
- Free tiles
- you can only pick a tile with nothing on top of it and an open side on the left or right. Tiles you cannot pick are drawn darker.
- Clearing
- pick two matching tiles and both disappear. If you pick a different tile, your choice moves to the one you picked last.
- Flowers and seasons
- the turtle includes one each of the flower tiles (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo) and the season tiles (spring, summer, autumn, winter). Any flower matches any flower, and any season any season, even with different pictures.
- Winning
- clear every tile to win.
- When stuck
- if no pair can be cleared, “Reshuffle” rearranges the remaining tiles (always into a solvable layout), or “Undo” takes you back.
Optional rules
You choose these when opening a table.
- Stack shape
- a small 72-tile stack is the default. In “Details” when opening a table you can choose the best-known shape, the 144-tile turtle.
