How to play Kakushi-fuda

With one word from the house,
find the nine hidden cards.

A word game: from 25 word cards, find your side's nine using the one-word clue and number the house gives. Open the ogre card and you lose. Play alone, or with two to four people talking it over. The word cards are in Japanese.

No sign-up and nothing to install. Enter a name and you're straight in at the table. You can start on your own, too.

What is Kakushi-fuda?

Clue and number Fruit 2 2 + 1 = up to 3 open one at a time Apple Your side Open another Train Snow Other cards Turn ends Ogre The ogre card Lose at once After each turn, the house opens one of its indigo cards. Open all 9 of yours to win; if the house's 8 open first, you lose.
The shopkeeper gives one word and a number ("Fruit 2" means two of your side's cards connect to fruit). You may turn up to one more card than the number, and you keep going while you hit your side's cards (red). Turning a neutral card or a card of the house's side (indigo), or stopping, ends your turn, and the house's side then turns one of its own. Turn all nine of your side's cards first to win; you lose if all eight of the house's cards are turned or you turn the ogre card.

Twenty-five word cards are laid on the desk: nine are your side's, eight the house's, seven belong to neither side, and one is the ogre card. The house gives a clue and a number, such as "round · 3". Open the cards the clue brings to mind; open all nine of yours first and you win. Each time your turn ends the house opens one of its own, so there is no time to dawdle.

if the card is your side's, you may keep going. A card of neither side, or one of the house's, ends your turn. After opening one card you may also end your turn yourself.
The house's side
each time your turn ends, the house opens one of its own cards.
